Dry methane reforming in a piston engine for chemical energy storage and carbon dioxide utilization: Kinetic modeling and thermodynamic evaluation

The flexible energy conversion in piston engines may offer one possibility for storing from renewable sources. This work theoretically explores the engine-based dry methane reforming to convert mechanical into chemical energy, achieving a net negative CO2 balance this step. endothermic, endergonic process is activated by temperature increase during compression stroke, assisted reduction of heat capacity through dilution with an atomic inert gas, namely argon. leads exergy, as higher-exergy species are produced small exergy losses while simultaneously consuming CO2. In work, homogenous serves power-to-gas and storage solution, presenting alternative catalytic processes. engine simulated using time-dependent single-zone model detailed kinetics, followed analysis thermodynamics kinetics. With inlet temperatures ranging 423–473 K argon dilutions 91–94 mol%, CH4 between 50–90% 30–80%, respectively, resulting synthesis gas yields 45–55% H2/CO ratio 1 5.
